Plug-In Solar Panels in the UK: Are They Any Good?
Plug-in solar panels can be a useful way to generate a small amount of electricity at home, particularly for renters, flat owners and people who cannot install a full rooftop solar system. What are plug-in solar panels?
Plug-in solar panels – sometimes called balcony solar, plug-and-play solar or plug-in photovoltaic systems – are small solar generation systems designed to connect to a home's electrical system through a standard socket.
The new UK rules allow compliant plug-in solar kits with a maximum output of up to 800W.

Are plug-in solar panels now legal in the UK?
Yes. Compliant plug-in solar systems became legal to buy and use across Great Britain from 27 August 2026.
That includes homes in Scotland.
However, this does not mean that any solar panel can simply be connected to any socket.
Products must meet the relevant UK safety requirements, and there are important rules and safety considerations around how and where they are used.
Are plug-in solar panels safe?
Government testing found that compliant plug-in solar systems can operate safely with UK domestic electrical installations under the tested conditions.
However, electrical safety organisations have also made it clear that homeowners should not assume that every property is automatically suitable simply because the product comes with a plug.

- permissions may be required from a landlord, freeholder or property manager; and
- your local Distribution Network Operator should be informed following installation.
So while the technology is designed to be accessible, "plug-in" should not be confused with "no checks required".
How much electricity can plug-in solar generate?
This is where the biggest difference between plug-in solar and conventional rooftop solar becomes clear.
A legal plug-in solar kit is limited to a maximum output of 800W.
By comparison, the Energy Saving Trust says the average domestic rooftop solar installation in the UK is around 3.5kWp.
That means a typical rooftop system has more than four times the peak generating capacity of an 800W plug-in system.
And depending on the size and suitability of your roof, a professionally designed system can be larger still.
